Dry needling is a technique that is used to treat long standing and persistent verrucae. Dry needling is performed by our podiatrists here at Manchester Podiatry. Dry needling is a procedure that requires an injection of local anaesthetic into the foot so that you are pain free during the procedure. Once the foot is numb, a technique which involves puncturing the lesion is used in order to push the virus into the deeper adipose tissue. The aim of treatment for verrucae using dry needling is to initiate an immune response so that the body can recognise and kill the virus.
A verruca is caused by a virus, therefore treatment relies on the body's immune system to recognise and kill it.
Dry needling helps to destroy the verruca virus by:
Pushing the virus into the deeper adipose tissues so that it is recognised and destroyed by the immune system. Destroy growth of the verruca lesion through destruction of the verruca's papillae. The virus that causes verrucae to develop lives in the upper layer of skin, this layer is known as the epidermis. The immune fighting cells are deeper, in a layer called the dermis, which is where the blood supply is; blood contains immune fighting cells.
The main benefit of dry needling is remission of persistent verrucae.
Suitability for dry needling is dependent upon a number of factors, therefore it is essential that an assessment is carried out by our podiatrists here at Manchester Podiatry beforehand, in order to ascertain individual suitability for the procedure.
