An ingrown toenail, or onychocryptosis as it is medically known, is a painful condition that can affect either one, or both sides of a toenail. An ingrown toenail is when the side of the nail pierces and then presses, and/or grows into the surrounding flesh, leading to pain, inflammation and possible infection.
If your child has an ingrown toenail visit us at Manchester Podiatry so that appropriate treatment can take place. If the shape of your child's toenail makes it difficult to cut, or prone to recurring ingrowth, then these nails can be treated regularly by a podiatrist at Manchester Podiatry, or removed permanently.
Podiatric treatment at Manchester Podiatry for a child with an ingrown toenail depends on how severe the problem is. Ingrown toenails in children can be treated either non-surgically or surgically (using local anaesthetic). The treatment option best for your child will depend on how severe the symptoms are. Nail surgery is not always necessary, and quite often the problem can be resolved quickly in clinic. If nail surgery is deemed to be the most suitable treatment option then this will be discussed with you.
Once the ingrown toenail has been resolved our podiatrists will advise you on the best way to prevent the problem happening again, giving advice on correct nail cutting techniques and footwear.
Treatment for an ingrown toenail at Manchester Podiatry will therefore encompass one or more of the following:
If you suspect that your child has an ingrown toenail it is important to have it treated. If treated promptly our podiatrists here at Manchester Podiatry can remove the offending nail spike quickly and painlessly in clinic. If the nail is fully ingrown and it is not possible to remove it in clinic then minor surgery involving a local anaesthetic may be necessary to remove the side of the nail that is causing the problem. If surgical intervention is required to remove the ingrown toenail then this will be fully discussed with you and an appropriate assessment carried out.
